ENGLISH: Ryan Ehlermann Mrs. Kerr English 8 March 18, 2011 The Olympics Sports are great entertainment but Olympic sports are even more amazing. The Olympics are a group of different sports played by teams around the world and enjoyed by people around the world. Although the ancient Olympics had fewer events than modern and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, they had much more benefits. Whoever wins the Olympics back in the ancient time is proudly honored and praised. The modern Olympics have multiple games and from athletes all over the globe. There is also a modern Olympics for the disable so that athletes with disabilities can compete. The Olympics are great because modern Olympics have enjoyable sports, and because an amazing sport in the Olympic events is curling and it is very entertaining. First, modern Olympics have enjoyable sports. These sports, in the summer Olympics include, running, wrestling, boxing, equestrian events, modern pentathlon, badminton, soccer, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoeing, handball, judo, volleyball, tae kwon do, softball, triathlon, sailing and table tennis. Also within those events there are 300 individual events (Modern Day Olympic Events). Some other fun sports that are in the winter Olympics are snowboarding, freestyle ski jumping, speed skating and short track speed skating, curling, alpine and cross country skiing, ice hockey, the skeleton, the bobsled, figure skating, the biathlon and the Nordic combined. Additionally the top 3 winners of the event played win medals. The medals include a bronze, silver, and gold metal (Winter Olympics Event). The modern Olympics are what every sports fan in the world looks forward to and that is why it is so popular. Secondly, an amazing sport in the Olympic events is curling because it is very entertaining. Curling is a very entertaining sport because people like to watch the granite stone slide down the ice waiting for it to stop at the right moment. This sport is also amazing because it is believed to be one of the world’s oldest team sports (World Curling Federation). Although some Americans think that curling isn’t “really” a sport, it is and it’s played in 45 different countries. Canada is currently the holder of the gold medal for curling (Vanderhoof). In addition to the game, the first curling clubs started in Scotland. Scotland is also where the curling rules were written (World Curling Federation). Curling is played in the winter Olympics every 4 years and it’s worth waiting for. Finally, the Olympics is a tradition in every country because modern Olympics have pleasurable sports, and because an astounding sport in the Olympic events is curling and it is very engaging. The Olympics, as we know today, is a huge part of this world ever since 1896 in Athens, Greece.
